What to look for when viewing a property.

Knowing what to look for in a property can be difficult, particularly for first-timers. This list is devised to be ideal for anyone who has seen a property and likes the look and is ready to start digging beneath the surface to see if it is right for you.

Storage space

This may seem obvious but making sure you have the room to store your belongings is always a good idea! It is surprisingly common for people not too bear this in mind but it can save you a lot in the future. If you move into a property and you haven’t got enough space you might see yourself renting a storage unit, or even getting rid of your belongings.

Plumbing

This is not the most obvious thought for people but a quick checking of the plumbing is never a bad idea. A quick test of the taps/radiators to test the water pressure and that the radiators work is worth doing.

Structural integrity

It can be hard to know the ins and outs of what to see with the property but large cracks are always a red-flag and especially at the end of terraces, where extensions join or bay windows.

Soundproofing

How loud is the road outside? Can you hear your neighbours talking through the walls? It’s always worth a few seconds in silence when in a new property to ensure that there isn’t too much exterior noise that you aren’t happy with.

External Window Frames

Inspect the cleanliness in and around windows to get a good feel for the property. Windows being a bit out of the way show the level of attention to cleaning very clearly. Look around the rims, how easily they open etc.

Location, location, location!

Is the property in the right place for you? Especially if you can’t drive but even if you can is the area it’s situated in good for you? Simple things like public transport in the area and access to things like pharmacies if you regularly need medication or schools etc.

But more importantly…

Does it look like what you think of when you think of home? If it looks right and feels right then why not? As long as you look it over first and use this guide and any others then it could be a great move. Friends you have the work in property or construction are always worth bringing along as well!
